6. Basket, Indian - Cowlitz Indian Western Red Cedar inner bark basket made by "Indian Mary" and given to Mrs. George A. Poland. Basket is plaited loosely in a checkerboard weave with diagonal finishing on the rim. A small loop of yellow string is looped into the top edge. Running horizontally along the outside are 5 parallel stips of a lighter brown material (beargrass, available only in alpine areas). Some bullrush inside. Fraying in several places. Weave is broken in three spots on the basket - two on the side and one on the bottom edge. Because of its loose weave, one end sags when freestanding. Probably a learning basket.

7. Basket, Indian - large oval Cowlitz Indian utility basket, belonged to Margaret Huntington, given to Betty Noerenberg in 1972. Coil basket of spruce root (outside) with bullrush (inside), tightly woven (watertight at one time). Top edge is covered with heavy leather fastened on by copper rivets. At one point the bottom was broken out of the basket and it was put back on with copper wire. Donor's number 8.2. Originally a cooking basket. Leather reinforced rim added later, with strap holes for hanging on the back of a horse (as evidenced by flattened side).

8. Basket, Indian - Round Indian Basket made by Mary Pete, Cowlitz County; Original owners: Mr. & Mrs. Wallace Huntington; Coiled basket with imbrication in black, dark brown and light brown in a complex diagonal pattern. Rim is slightly scalloped with small open spaces.

9. Chisel - Chipped stone andesite chisel, long and narrow with a blade edge of only .7 cm. 5.6 cm long. Found on the McCorkle farm in Lexington.

10. Drill - small agate-like stone drill point, mottled brown and white, opaque in places. Found in the upper Kalama River area

11. Jug - coiled cedar root basket, woven water tight and treated with resin so it could be used as a water jug. From Cowlitz River area of Lewis County. Once had two small braided horse hair loops on one side (one is missing)

12. Knife - This is a very crudely made iron dagger, made by the Indians from the spring of a beaver trap. Measures 8.75" long with 1" wide blade. Handle widens, and the end has a hole 1" in diameter. Very crude and badly rusted. Found in the Toutle River area.

15. Weight, Net - Stone carved; Net weight or anchor found on beach at Eagle Cliff, above Cathlamet on the Columbia; could also be the head of a maul. Used in Cowlitz Corridor Exhibit - Cowlitz Indian.
