Description |
Branding iron for shingle bolts; Diamond bar brand; Property of John Robin and Sons who established the first shingle mill in Castle Rock in 1883; the first site was at the present (1959) location of the Howard Quick "West Side Nursery Farm" (444 Quick Rd). The later site of the mill was at the west end of Shintaffer Ave. Castle Rock. The first carload of shingles from Cowlitz County, which was also the first carload of shingles from the state of Washington, came from this mill. They were shipped over the N.P.R.R. to Pennsylvania free of charge July 4, 1885. All mills used brands to identify ther shingle bolts; According to donor, Earl Underhill, this branding iron came from the Shintaffer Ave. mill. He doubted branding irons were in use in 1883 at the first shingle mill. When more mills were in operation and shingle bolts came down the Toutle River in drives brands were necessary in sorting the bolts at the catching boom. |
